The Liverpool String Academy

What we do

The Liverpool String Academy offers young violin, viola, cello and double-bass players specialist education in string playing with particular emphasis upon historically-informed performance and ensemble music. Baroque music can be thought of as music of the past, but through the expert guidance of our passionate tutors, the LSA students discover that this music has actually got more in common with contemporary rock and pop than the stereotypical image of classical music!. With the knowledge of style and technique we can bring this music to life in the 21st century.

To become Early Music specialists in their own right, LSA students have to apply themselves over a prolonged period to develop new techniques of bowing and fingering as well as a distinct musical sensibility more suited to the specific repertoires that are the object of their studies. Most importantly, at the heart of our community is a love for making music and the commitment of empowering the next generation of young musicians!

Ensemble Training

Our ensembles are at the heart of what we do. We believe that every child should have access to free, high quality ensemble training.

Playing in an ensemble improves overall musicianship, self-esteem and social skills and whilst at the LSA our students learn the additional skills of Historically-Informed Performance.

We provide high profile concert opportunities at Liverpool’s Tung Auditorium as their affiliate ensemble for 2025-2027 and at our home in Liverpool Parish Church. Our ensembles also perform with internationally renowned visiting artists and take part in annual residential trips.
